Tile vs. Shingle Roofs in Florida: Which Is Better for Storm Resistance?

November 19, 2025By Carlos Mendez, Master Roofer

If you're building a new home or replacing a roof in Florida, one of your biggest decisions is choosing between tile and shingle roofing. Both are popular choices, but they perform differently when hurricanes and severe storms hit. Let's break down the pros and cons of each.

Concrete and Clay Tile Roofs

Storm Resistance Advantages

  • Weight: Tile roofs are heavy, which helps them resist wind uplift. A concrete tile roof can weigh 900-1,200 lbs per square (100 sq ft), compared to 200-350 lbs for asphalt shingles.
  • Impact resistance: Quality concrete and clay tiles can withstand significant impact from hail and debris without cracking.
  • Wind ratings: Properly installed tile roofs can be rated for winds up to 150+ mph, meeting Miami-Dade County's stringent High-Velocity Hurricane Zone requirements.
  • Longevity: Tile roofs typically last 50+ years, meaning fewer replacements over time.

Storm Resistance Disadvantages

  • Individual tile damage: While tiles are durable, individual tiles can crack or break from debris impact, requiring replacement.
  • Underlayment vulnerability: When tiles break or are displaced, the underlayment beneath is exposed, which can lead to leaks.
  • Walking damage: Tiles can crack if walked on improperly, making post-storm inspections tricky.
  • Weight concerns: The weight that helps resist wind can be a problem for older structures not designed for tile.

Asphalt Shingle Roofs

Storm Resistance Advantages

  • Flexibility: Shingles flex rather than crack, which can help them survive some impacts that would break tiles.
  • Easy repairs: Damaged shingles are quick and inexpensive to replace.
  • Improved technology: Modern high-wind shingles with enhanced nailing patterns and adhesive can be rated for 130+ mph winds.
  • Lighter weight: Suitable for virtually any structure without reinforcement.

Storm Resistance Disadvantages

  • Wind vulnerability: Even with high-wind ratings, shingles are more prone to lifting and tearing in hurricane conditions than properly installed tile.
  • Shorter lifespan: Quality architectural shingles last 20-30 years in Florida--less than half the lifespan of tile.
  • Heat degradation: Florida's intense UV exposure breaks down asphalt faster, reducing storm resistance over time.
  • Debris damage: Flying debris can tear or puncture shingles more easily than it can break tiles.

The Verdict: Which Performs Better?

In terms of pure storm resistance, properly installed tile roofs generally outperform shingle roofs in Florida's hurricane environment. Their weight and durability provide better protection against sustained high winds and flying debris.

However, there are important caveats:

  • Installation quality matters enormously. A poorly installed tile roof will fail before a well-installed shingle roof.
  • Maintenance is essential. Both roof types need regular inspection and maintenance to perform well in storms.
  • Budget considerations are real. Tile roofs cost 2-3x more than shingle roofs upfront.
  • Your structure must support it. Not all homes can handle the weight of tile without reinforcement.

Our Recommendation

If your budget and structure allow for tile, it's generally the better choice for Florida's storm environment. However, a high-quality architectural shingle roof with proper high-wind installation is still a solid choice and will protect your home well when maintained properly.

What About Metal Roofing?

We'd be remiss not to mention metal roofing, which has gained popularity in Florida. Standing seam metal roofs offer excellent wind resistance (many rated for 140+ mph), don't crack like tile, and last 40-70 years. They're lighter than tile but more expensive than shingles. For homeowners looking for a balance of performance and longevity, metal is worth considering.
